The costs and risk of failure in drug discovery and development are increasing and development is becoming more challenging. Drug discovery creates new candidates for drug development. Drug development is followed by actual product development where drugs are transformed into products for registration and sale. To reduce risks and costs there is a need for new innovative tools for R&D to modify new drug candidates and formulations in the drug discovery or development phase. Thin film surface modification can solve some of these problems in bringing better drugs to the market.
Novald Medical has demonstrated that the Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) coating method has a great potential to achieve significant improvements in pharmaceutical research, manufacturing and development. ALD coating on drug formulations dramatically changes the behavior of the formulation allowing easier processing e.g. the direct compression of powders. Furthermore physical and chemical properties of drug substance can be modified to improve e.g. stability, to make better pharmaceuticals. The dissolution behavior of drug formulation can be modified by extending or accelerating their release by an ALD coating less than 10 nm thick.
Our objectives are to create novel pharmaceutical formulations and, with our partners, to successfully commercialize this novel coating method in the field of pharmacy and medicine.
